What is Qingming Festival?

Remembering earlier generations

Visiting ancestral graves, tidying burial places and paying respects are central Qingming practices. Offerings and ceremonies vary between families and communities; remembrance is the shared theme, not one compulsory ritual.

A solar date in a lunar-calendar year

Qingming is unusual among the festivals here because it follows a solar term. It stays near the same Gregorian date while the surrounding lunar date changes from year to year.

What “tomb-sweeping” means

Qingming means “Clear and Bright”; Tomb-Sweeping Day describes its best-known act of remembrance. Care can involve removing grass and debris, tending the grave and renewing its inscriptions. The work is a way for living descendants to maintain a connection with earlier generations, often with several generations visiting together.

Remembrance beyond a graveside

An outdoor grave is not essential to the observance. In Singapore, families also visit urn niches in columbaria or ancestral tablets in temples. Flowers, tea and favourite foods of the deceased may accompany the visit. Particular offerings follow family or dialect-group traditions, rather than a single festival-wide checklist.

The exact rule is Pure Brightness solar-term instant. It follows a solar-term instant, so it remains close to the same Gregorian date while surrounding lunar dates move.

The Pure Brightness solar term begins when the Sun reaches 15° of its apparent annual path. The observance uses the civil date containing that instant; the seasonal interval continues until the next solar term.

Is Qingming always April 5?

No. It occurs around April 5, but its date depends on the solar-term boundary. Use the date listed for the year you need, rather than assuming one fixed Gregorian or lunar date.

Must the family visit on Qingming day itself?

Not necessarily. In Singapore, visits may take place during the ten days before or after the festival. Agree the family’s gathering separately from the calendar’s exact Qingming date.

Is Qingming the same as Ghost Festival?

No. Qingming centres on ancestral remembrance in spring. Ghost Festival belongs to the seventh lunar month and also includes offerings for wandering spirits.
