How Chinese lunar age is counted

Start at one on the day of birth. Add one each Chinese New Year, when lunar month one begins. The formula is the comparison date’s lunar year minus the birth date’s lunar year, plus one. January and early-February dates can still belong to the preceding lunar year.

Lunar age and your birthday

A Gregorian birthday increases completed years; a lunar birthday repeats the lunar month and day. Neither date is the annual change in nominal age: everyone using this count adds one at Chinese New Year. Lunar age is usually one or two ahead of completed years.

Which age does the Chinese gender calendar use?

The Chinese gender calendar uses the mother’s nominal lunar age on the conception date to choose a row from 18 to 45. The conception date’s lunar month selects the column. Set “Age on this date” to the conception date to find that row.
