From a birth record to an annual date

What is a lunar birthday?

A lunar birthday repeats the month and day recorded in the Chinese calendar, rather than the month and day printed on a Gregorian birth certificate. Both describe the original birth; they produce different anniversary dates in later years.

First, convert the birth date

The finder locates the original day in its lunar year, numbered month and regular or leap occurrence. That full identity is what the yearly search preserves.

Your date, 1 March 2027, is lunar 2027, month 1, day 24.

Then, find its next occurrence

For each later lunar year, the finder selects the same month, leap status and day, then converts it back to Gregorian. “Next occurrence” is the first matching date on or after today.

Your next date is 1 March 2027. See the surrounding month →

Keep the original record

If your family record already gives a lunar birthday, check whether it includes 闰, the leap-month marker. Leaving that marker out can select a different month and produce a different Gregorian date.

Two ways of counting age

A birthday and an age increment are not the same

Completed Gregorian years

This age counts completed years since the Gregorian birthday. A person begins at zero and gains a year on that anniversary.

Nominal age · 虚岁

In the convention shown here, a person is one sui at birth and gains a year at Chinese New Year. The calculation is current lunar year minus birth lunar year, plus one—not simply Gregorian age plus one in every case.

A child born shortly before Chinese New Year can become two sui within days. This reflects the counting convention, not two completed years of life.

Reading the exceptions

Why a row may have no birthday date

A short lunar month

A month of 29 days has no day 30. The finder reports that absence; it does not quietly replace a thirtieth-day birthday with day 29.

An absent leap month

A leap-month birthday repeats exactly only when the same numbered leap month occurs again. A regular month of the same number remains a different occurrence.

The publication boundary

A lunar date can exist while its Gregorian equivalent falls beyond the published calendar. That is labelled outside the available range, not described as a missing birthday.

Lunisolar movement

Why the date moves

The lunar day stays the same; its Gregorian position changes with the rhythm of lunar months and leap months.

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon and run 29 or 30 days, while a leap month is inserted about every third year to keep the year aligned with the seasons. A lunar date therefore drifts against the Gregorian calendar, usually falling eleven days earlier than the previous year before a leap month pushes it forward again.

Two consequences matter for a birthday. A date on the 30th of a month does not exist in years where that month is short. And a birthday inside a leap month recurs only when the same leap month recurs, which is irregular — sometimes decades apart.

The table marks both cases explicitly. The same conversion is available for any date in the date converter.

Family practice

When a lunar date is absent

A 30th day can disappear in a short month, and a leap-month birthday can be absent for many years. Families handle those cases differently; the table keeps the exact calendar pattern visible so you can follow the custom that matters to you.
